Description of the painting by Alexander Volkov Pomegranate teahouse

The first thing that draws attention in this picture is the unusual form. The fascinating game of triangles creates an effect of unreality of what is happening, the viewer is as if immersed in the looking glass. Geometry is mesmerizing and gives a feeling of something unusual and intimate, beyond the boundaries of this world.

With a long look at the picture, the viewer creates the feeling that he himself falls into this room and becomes a participant in this mystical event. Even the shape of the bowl indicates the non-standard nature of the current moment.

In this painting, Volkov merges the features of the east, Art Nouveau, Cubism and abstraction. The artist grew up in Central Asia and he has been faithful to the Asian theme all his life. The heady spicy world of the East pervades the picture. “Pomegranate Tea House” (1924, State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow).

It is a very complete work, in which the conventionality of the image reached the level when painting had not yet gone over to abstraction, but was already hovering over reality in the realms of the innermost and spiritual. Traditional tea drinking in a tea house is presented as a cult event, fraught with many meanings.

The pure color and monotony of the image in this picture resembles an oriental carpet, on which one of the motifs of an oriental tale is captured. Each dot in this picture is saturated with the East.

Starting from the saturated color (red is the color of the sacred knowledge of the Sufis of the East) and ending with the plot itself, conveying the color and image of pastime in the East. The color of pomegranate in the East symbolizes another world, a transcendental world, a world that a person uninitiated in the sacrament cannot see.

The painting by Volkov depicts three eastern mystics immersed in a ritual of interaction with a parallel world. Behind them are three musicians who, playing with their three instruments, help create a favorable atmosphere for opening the way between the worlds.

Three characters are noteworthy. Given the merger of Russian and Eastern traditions in Volkov’s work, an association with the “Trinity” by Andrei Rublev is involuntarily carried out, even the characters' poses are in tune with those depicted in the “Trinity”. East, as the "Trinity" Rublev Russian people.
